In Indian weddings, there is a very interesting custom. During the phera ceremony, the groom has to take off his shoes and the sisters of the bride have to steal them. After the ceremony is over, they give back the shoes, but only after receiving the ransom money from the groom. The song 'Joote Dedo Paise Lelo', from the movie 'Hum Apke Hain Kaun' and sung by Lata Mangeshkar & S.P. Balasubramaniam., revolves around this ritual only. It covers the exchange that takes place between the bride's sister (saali) and groom's brother (devar), where one of them tries to get the shoes and the other tries to catch hold of the money.
